Who is BNI Coal?
BNI Coal Ltd., a wholly owned
subsidiary of ALLETE (NYSE-ALE), owns and operates the Center Mine
near Center, N.D. This surface mine supplies lignite coal to fuel
the nearby Milton R. Young steam electric Generating Station, Units
I and II.
Each year BNI Coal mines
about 4.5 million tons of lignite, supplying both units of the Young
Station. The Mining process annually disturbs and reclaims
approximately 210 acres per year. The electricity made from BNI's
lignite lights up farms and businesses in eastern North Dakota and
northern Minnesota.
Who we are looking for:
BNI is
searching for an energetic individual with a desire and a capacity
to learn about the technologies and processes involved in the
operation of a surface coal mine. The successful candidate
will assist the mine’s engineers and surveyors in the day to day
support of mining operations. Initial duties will primarily
include surveying and surveying related tasks. This work
supports BNI’s reclamation effort and will involve working with a
fleet of scrapers, excavators, and overburden trucks.
Subsequent duties may include work in civil design projects such as
road, ponds, diversions, and other surface water management
structures. These projects will be assigned to the successful
candidate in accordance with their demonstrated technical ability
and desire to gain these experiences. Surveying at BNI is done
entirely with differentially corrected GPS. Candidates need
not have experience in the operation of GPS technology although such
experience is desirable. BNI performs all engineering design
work utilizing the Carlson Software suite of design products.
These software products operate inside of AutoCAD. As such,
proficiency in AutoCAD is highly desirable. Experience with
Carlson Software products is not necessary as this internship will
provide an opportunity to gain this experience.
The candidate
must be currently enrolled at a sophomore level or above at an
accredited North Dakota institution, have a GPA of 2.5 or greater,
be eligible to work in the United States, possess a valid driver’s
license, pass a background check and drug screen.
The candidate will obtain a MSHA 5023 certification and must
be able to work safely indoors, outdoors in various weather
conditions, and at heights if necessary.
Extended periods of sitting at a workstation will be required
with the occasional lifting of less than 50 lbs.
The candidate should be able to communicate clearly both
verbally and in writing with users of varying technical skill
levels.
Diesel Mechanic
BNI Coal, Ltd. is accepting

Responsibilities
include: repair/maintenance of diesel engines, transmissions,
converters, differentials, brakes, hydraulics, and electrical
systems for construction and mining equipment.
Minimum
requirements: H.S. Degree or GED; Diesel Mechanic degree required;
valid drivers license, 5 years work experience.
Two year diesel mechanic
degree may be substituted for 2 years work experience. Computer
skills relating to the use of diagnostic software are required.

publications, schematics, and equipment electrical systems.

include general labor as shift worker including: operating and
maintaining large mining equipment, pumping water and maintaining
pumps, general clean up, and assist mechanics. Must become
proficient in operating large mining equipment.
Minimum
requirements: H.S. Degree or GED; valid drivers license, 5 years
work experience. Two year
college degree may be substituted for 2 years work experience.
Experience in operating large construction/earth moving
equipment is required. Experience with welding, dragline
maintenance, or diesel mechanics are preferred but not required.
