October of 2000 marked the 100 millionth ton of lignite coal sold by BNI Coal, Ltd. from our Center mining operations. We celebrated with a bratwurst barbecue for our employees, customers and many more guests.

Chuck Reichert, President and General Manager of BNI Coal, commended the efforts of past and present BNI employees. Not only have we delivered 100 millions tons, but we did it at the lowest price within the state!

Dave Loer, President and CEO of Minnkota Power (one of BNI's major customers) also praised the efforts of BNI, noting that the Young Station #1 has been one of the 20 lowest-cost generating stations since its inception.

Both Chuck Reichert and Dave Loer agreed that the close working relationship between BNI and Minnkota Power has played an critical role in maintaining the low-cost status of both our coal and electricity. Both men also stated that they hope to be retired by the time the 200 million ton mark is reached (in about 25 years).
