Background: BNI Coal, Ltd., a BNI Energy company and subsidiary of ALLETE, Inc. with locations in Bismarck and Center, ND is now accepting applications for the following position(s) at the Center Mine in Center, ND. Please see below for more details.

Each year, BNI Coal mines 4 to 4.5 million tons of lignite, supplying two steam electric units of the Milton R. Young Station situated adjacent to the BNI mining operations. The Mining process disturbs and reclaims approximately 310 acres per year. The electricity made from BNI's lignite lights up farms and businesses in eastern North Dakota and northern Minnesota.

Note: This is an on-site position with potential for limited hybrid work. Salary Range $134,217 to $167,772 depending upon experience.

Responsibilities:

  • As a member of the BNI Senior Executive team, this position maintains a high level of business literacy about the BNI mine plan, financial position, strategy, culture, and competitive positioning.
  • Collaborates with management and supervisors to develop and lead environmental, and landowner/lease holder events, relations, and programs.
  • Working with landowners and government agencies on leased lands and establishing rental agreements on BNI owned lands that promote timely bond release as well as, facilitate and/or mitigate landowner issues as it relates to mining, disturbances, operational changes, permits, or compliance.
  • Hires and trains Environmental staff and recommends staffing needs of the mine.
  • Organizes and oversees the schedules and work of Environmental staff.

Minimum requirements: Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, natural resources, wildlife, environmental engineering, or related field; master’s degree in environmental science is preferred. Seven years’ experience related to environmental matters with at least three in a management role required.

Note: This is an on-site position. Salary range is $98,260 to $122,825 depending upon experience.

Contributes to the effectiveness of the environmental team by performing duties for the team and other professionals, including planning and directing coal exploration activities, characterizing mine site geology and geohydrology, and administering a geological database.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate the operation of drilling programs to collect data for coal exploration and overburden analysis. Supervise drilling projects.
  • Monitors ground water and surface water activities in and around the permit areas, including directing the installation of piezometers and coordinating inspections by governmental regulatory personnel for water control and special use disposal sites. Also monitor radioactive source materials used in geophysical logging of test holes.
  • Remain current on Federal/State environmental laws governing the industry and writing geology and geohydrology, and surface water sections of mining permits and waste disposal permits.
  • Reporting to governmental agencies and to mine management on coal, water, and overburden analyses, drilling, and microbiological sampling of water supply.
  • Administration of the computerized geological database for the mine planning system. Assist in the preparation and maintenance of mining permits.

Minimum requirements: Bachelor’s degree in arts/science in Geology, Geohydrology, or Geological Engineering; Two years’ experience preferred. Minimum of one field season of drilling or exploration, as well as knowledge of groundwater instrumentation and computer literacy.
